Actual prices you receive when selling gold to a dealer, pawn shop, or refiner will always be lower than the calculated melt value, typically 70–93% of melt value depending on the buyer. The difference covers the buyer’s operating costs, refining fees, and profit margin.

Melt value also does not account for the value of gemstones, collectible value of coins, designer brand premiums, or any other non-metal value that a piece may carry.
